Incumbent Bilski retains County Judge position, runoffs for commissioner, District Judge

Results reported Wednesday morning following a recount remain the same. Austin County Judge Carolyn Bilski retained her office over a strong challenge from Virgil Price. Bilski totaled 2,662 votes (53.27 per cent) in the unofficial totals late Tuesday night to 2,335 for Price.
“I am very grateful for the continued trust the voters of Austin County have placed in me,” said Bilski. “I will to do everything I can to continue to earn that trust.”

Two incumbents file for Wallis Council positions

Three At-Large Wallis City Council positions are subject to a May 8, 2010 election. Incumbents James King and Don Daft have filed applications as of Tuesday, March 2. The sign up period runs through March 8. Applications may be picked up and returned to City Hall during normal business hours, Monday through Friday.

Army FMTV contract will move to Wisconsin

The U.S. Army announced on Friday afternoon it would stand by its earlier decision to move the contract for Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV) to Oshkosh, a Wisconsin firm. BAE has manufactured the FMTV’s in their Sealy plant for 17 years and over 3000 Austin County jobs are at stake with the ruling.

Local woman injured in single vehicle wreck

Wallis resident Georgia Valerian, was seriously injured in a single-vehicle accident around 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 15. Austin County Sheriff’s Deputy M. Doerrig was the investigating officer assisted by Wallis Police Department Sergeant Ronnie Griffin.

Death investigation of jail inmate

On Sunday, Feb. 14, at approximately 12:44 a.m. Fort Bend County Emergency Medical Services responded to the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office Jail Detention Center regarding an 18 year-old inmate, Emmanuel Earl Baines, who was found unresponsive in a jail cell by a Jail Deputy. (more…)

Long distance proposal

James Clark traveled a long way to become a resident of Precinct 4 in Austin County and to serve as Pct. 4 Constable. It’s not that far from his home town of Cuero, but the miles he traveled courting his wife, Wallis area native Mary Speckmaier, were very long.
James graduated from Cuero High School and obtained his Peace Officer Certificate from Victoria College. He attended Texas Bible Institute in Columbus in the late 90’s and worked for the Colorado County Sheriff’s Department from 2002 to 2004.

A strong representation of both local and state wide candidates for the March 2 Primary Election was present at the Austin County Republican meeting at Tony’s Restaurant in Sealy on Feb. 4.
Republican County Chairman Michael Skrivanek was the emcee for the evening and introduced the candidates.
The amount of candidates present and the large crowd necessitated a very structured procedure for the evening.

Community support helps young man’s fight with Leukemia

When Addison Marshall was in third grade, he tried out for peewee football. During the initial evaluation process, one of the coaches questioned him about how he had learned to tackle. Addison smiled and responded, “My big brother beats me up so I tackle him and it’s fun.”
So began his pursuit and passion in playing football. Since that time, Addison has played football every year until May 2009 when he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia at the age of 15. Addison is currently undergoing treatment at MD Anderson, a process that will span three years and the rest of his high school career.

Benefit scheduled for Turner children

Former Wallis residents Keitha Frank Turner and her mother, Betty Jo Frank were brutally murdered in Rosenberg in the early morning hours of Dec. 27. Turner’s husband, Albert James Turner, has been charged with the murders, but at press time, remains at large.

Charges filed in Bellville multiple murders

Austin County authorities filed Capital Murder charges on Jan.20 against Maron Thomas in the deaths of five of his family members.
Thomas allegedly killed his mother, Debra Washington, 54; step-father, George Washington, 69; brother, Cedric Thomas, 19; sister, Kiana Phearse, 25; and niece, Khalilah Chambers-Massey, 2 early Sunday morning, Jan. 17.
