Gomez win Kubota contest

Pete Gomez of Sealy is shown receiving his prize from Jeff Virnau, manager of W. A. Virnau & Sons, Inc. in Sealy. Pete is the regional winner in the Kubota RTVforMe contest. Pete won a $200 gift certificate at W. A. Virnau & Sons and Sealy Tractor in Sealy. Pete’s name will be placed along with 21 other east Texas regional winners in the Jan. 17 drawing for a new Kubota RTV500.
Hubenak steps down after two terms

Pct. 4 Commissioner David Hubenak announced plans to retire prior to last year’s election and will serve his final day on the job on Dec. 30. Austin County Commissioners Court presented Hubenak with a plaque recognizing his eight year term on Dec. 21. Precinct 4 Commissioner David Hubenak decided earlier this year to retire after serving eight years in the office. He says he is really going to retire.
“I am looking forward to retirement,” said Hubenak. “Barbara and I want to travel and of course we’ll stay active, maybe even get a little more active, in the community and church. We want to enjoy doing some of the things we have had to put off.”
Hubenak was elected in November of 2002 and took office on Jan. 1, 2003. He says roads were his main priority during his service to the county, but points out two county projects as major accomplishments of the court during his terms.

Wallis resident Booker T. Bonner attended a special 50-year reunion of Students for Direct Action (SDA) held on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin on Friday, Dec. 3.
A large group of ex-members of the student group were invited to the event and spent the day reminiscing of times and activities which became very important in the history of civil rights and integrations of our state universities and ultimately our nation.

A Heritage Christmas to be celebrated with Parade

Parade Marshals for the 29th Annual Lighted Christmas Parade were honored at a luncheon hosted by the Wallis Chamber of Commerce on Dec. 5. Pictured left to right are: Rudy Knesek, Irene Petter, Pauline Gutierrez and Viola Holub. Not pictured is Lillie Hunter.
A special group of citizens will lead the 29th Annual Lighted Wallis Christmas Parade on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 6 p.m. The theme for this year’s parade is “A Heritage Christmas – Land of the Free.”
The Parade Marshals for this year all played parts in that heritage. Rudy Knesek, Pauline Gutierrez, Irene Petter, Lillie Hunter and Viola Holub are all lifelong residents of Wallis and each has been an influential and active member of the community. This group represents a cross section of business and civic leaders who have participated in the development of the city.

Student council, FFA and NHS participate in annual food drive

BHS Student Council, FFA and NHS students participated in their annual food drive in November. The food was collected by local community members Leonard Banse and Thomas Hammermiller and taken to Saint Vincent DePaul and distributed within the Wallis community. State budget shortfalls top agenda for Brazos trustees

Brazos ISD Superintendent Jack Ellis informed trustees of potentially heavy cuts coming from the next Texas Legislative session concerning education funding.
The State of Texas is facing a large budget deficit for the upcoming year, exactly how large is still in question, and education groups are bracing for the impending decrease in funding.

Vehicle pursuit short circuits in Wallis

Shortly after midnight on Thursday morning, Nov. 18, an officer from the Wallis Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle on F.M. 1093 that had been reported stolen by Jacinto County. The vehicle fled from the officer and ended up driving through an alley way where it side swiped two electrical poles and hit a third pole head on that caused a transformer to blow.

Sealy lays out detailed development plan for commissioners

City of Sealy Mayor Nick Tirey and City Manager Chris Coffman laid out a detailed presentation for new development in the I-10/Hwy. 36 area in Sealy including frontage roads and safety projects to clean up the bottleneck at that intersection.

Brazos FFA competes at leadership contests

Brazos FFA members competed at District 4 Leadership Development Events on Nov. 15. Brazos FFA members competed at the District 4 FFA Leadership Development Events on Monday, Nov. 15. Those 16 members made up eight different leadership teams that competed against 18 other schools in District 4.
Team members and placing are as follows: Job Interview - Lauren Grigar 3rd; Radio Broadcasting - Lauren Grigar, Tyler Cotton and Hannah Stork 4th; Junior Creed Speaking - Jessica Terry 10th; Senior Creed Speaking - Cody Witzkoski 10th; Junior Quiz Team - Jessica Terry, Kelli Braunagel and Kasey Nieman 9th; Senior Quiz Team - Cody Witzkoski, Shawn Kubena, Alan Zapalac and Katelyn Miller 9th; Senior Skills - Taylor Nieman, Stratton Coleman and Cody Henry 7th; Public Relations - Allyssa Young, Morgan Supak and Rachel Vaughn 8th.
Leadership Development Events are contest that help students build leadership and speaking skills that will be necessary in their future.
Republicans regain control

Austin County voters mirrored the state and nation favoring Republican candidates by large majorities in every contested race on the county ballots.
In the contest for District Judge, 155th Judicial District, Republican Jeff Steinhauser defeated Democrat Alan Folger with 19,606 votes to 6,988 in the three county totals. Austin County favored Steinhauser 6,963 to 1,592, Fayette County 6,320 to 1,646 and Waller County 6,323 to 3,750.
