Multiple grass fires, which appeared to be started from a passing train, severely strained local fire departments and threatened homes and structures from Wallis to Orchard and beyond last Thursday.
Two grass fires within the city limits of Wallis, one across from Brazos High School, one near the Austin/Fort Bend County line, one near Hatton’s property, another just west of Macha Road, the largest at Reinecker Road, another near the intersection of FM 1489 and SH 36 and at least two more east of Orchard, all burning at the same time, were more than local fire departments could man. All 11 of the fires were on the north side of the BNSF tracks and SH 36.
In addition to the Wallis and Orchard Volunteer Fire Departments, units came from Sealy, Rosenberg, Richmond, Fulshear/Simonton, Pleak, East Bernard and Fairchild.
Strong southerly winds and freeze dried grass combined for fast moving fires. Several hundred acres were burned, but there was no reported loss of structures or livestock.

Precinct 4 Commissioner David Hubenak decided earlier this year to retire after serving eight years in the office. He says he is really going to retire.
“I am looking forward to retirement,” said Hubenak. “Barbara and I want to travel and of course we’ll stay active, maybe even get a little more active, in the community and church. We want to enjoy doing some of the things we have had to put off.”
Hubenak was elected in November of 2002 and took office on Jan. 1, 2003. He says roads were his main priority during his service to the county, but points out two county projects as major accomplishments of the court during his terms.
