Out here in the country, every family has a pickup. It’s just a necessary thing. We have to take animals to the sale or vet, haul our kid’s show animals, take a boat or trailer to the lake for the weekend, haul hay or feed occasionally, help someone move, and some of us are real farmers or ranchers that use them everyday, all day.

American Legion sponsors Boys and Girls State Citizens

Posted on July 10th, 2008

Editor’s note: Wallis American Legion Post 200 sponsored several students at Boys and Girls State activities in June. The students presented their activities to the American Legion at a recent meeting. Wallis News-Review will publish brief summaries of the student’s experiences as presented to the American Legion. This week’s presentation is from Stephanie Adamcik.

The 2008 session of the American Legion Auxiliary Bluebonnet Girls State was held June 17-24 at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin. Stephanie Adamcik was one of the 462 girls that attended as an American Legion Girls State Citizen and was sponsored by the Wallis American Legion Auxiliary, Unit #200. Her parents are Bill and Karen Adamcik of Wallis.

Letter to the Editor

Posted on June 27th, 2008

During a crisis, citizens must understand that they could be the first responders, and should be prepared for it. And you – as a first responder, emergency manager, government employee or citizen – can do something to perpetuate citizen preparedness.
Who becomes the first responder during a disaster, when 911 doesn’t work or the police or fire can’t respond immediately? The most likely answer is “whoever happens to be present.”

Congressman McCaul comments on TTC 69

Posted on June 18th, 2008

Austin-Congressman Michael McCaul (R-TX 10) claimed victory Wednesday for property owners in the Eastern half of the Tenth Congressional District. Land owners in Austin, Waller and Washington Counties are now completely out of the path of the proposed TTC 69 toll road. Tomball and Cypress in Western Harris County are now barely on the fringe of the proposed route.

TTC Commissioner Ted Houghton comments on I-69/TTC

Posted on June 18th, 2008

If you ask Texans what they want, be prepared to hear the answer.
From February to March of this year, officials at the Texas Department of Transportation spanned the state, asking Texans to give us their input on the proposed I-69/Trans-Texas Corridor (TTC).  During those two months, we held nearly 50 public hearings from northeast Texas to the southern end of the state.
We spoke with and listened to Texans from all walks of life:  workers in Laredo, farmers in Atlanta, landowners in Diboll, students in Huntsville, ranchers in the Valley and business owners in Houston.

TechTalk - AC for PC

Posted on June 13th, 2008

By Bernie Garner

Editor’s Note: About the author - Bernie Garner has been working with computers since 1982. In 1991 he built his first graphics computer based on the Commodore Amiga line of computers. He has worked in various fields that are closely related and dependant on computer technology. In 1993 he created the first 3D animation and visual effects workstation for the Art Institute of Houston for the “Music & Video Business curriculum”.  From there he went on in 1995 to create an entire 3D animation and effects suite for the Art Department at NBC Channel 2 (KPRC-TV2) where he won two Emmy awards in 3D Animation and Graphic Design utilizing the very workstations he was in charge of assembling. In 2002 he started his own visual effects and production company right here in Wallis, where he builds, maintains and upgrades all of the computer workstations that his company uses to create visual effects and graphic design for distinguished corporate clientele across the globe.

Recently I was asked to look at a PC on-site at a residential location as it had stopped working completely. It would not even turn on. Upon arrival at the residence I noticed that there was no AC running at all in the residence. The elderly woman that occupied the dwelling was disabled and was on a fixed income so she did not run her AC unit.

At a Glance-I think they really listened

The news about the I-69/TTC corridor following the footprint of US 59 is breaking as we are going to press today. Comments from transportation officials, politicians and everyone else that has a vested interest in the TTC, either for or against, are pouring in and each will try to put their own spin on it.
The bottom line is Austin and Waller counties have apparently been spared the destruction of much of our agricultural land and Wharton and other counties that US 59 already passes through will hopefully be able to limit their land loss to expansion of the existing right of way.
The Governor’s office has released a statement that they are happy because the TTC is closer now to being built, TxDOT is happy because, for the time being, landowners have quit throwing darts at them.

“Organic Gardening” column well received

Posted on June 13th, 2008

Dear Editor:
I was excited to see the new column on organic gardening. I’ve been trying to eat more organic products and foods with less chemicals and preservatives in them, but have been reluctant to start gardening because of my “brown thumb.” I always assumed that organic gardening was really complicated to do, but now I have some guidance that is pertinent to our area: the types of soils we have, the plants that do well here, and our specific pests. Most of the organic gardening books I’ve seen are more general in their instructions, so I’m looking forward to getting some good information.
Thanks.

Memorial Day Service attendance down

Posted on June 5th, 2008

Once again we had a Memorial Day Service which is always a touching Blessing to me.
It’s an honor we all have to show our appreciation to our service families—the past, the present and the future—who have served; and the only people who come to the service are the American Legion members. I always feel sad because there are a lot of families in Wallis who should be there to show respect to all service families overseas. We should be proud to be Americans. Everyone misses such a meaningful service. Our town should support such a patriotic event.

The school year has flown by and it is time for another group of high school students to graduate and move ahead to find their place in the world.
This is the first class of the three I’ve watched graduate at Brazos High School that I can actually identify most of the kids in the class picture. I am proud to say that it has been a joy to watch the pride and dedication they have exhibited in activities from academics to athletics, major livestock shows and also to youth groups in the local churches.
