Memorial Day Service attendance down
Posted on June 5th, 2008
Once again we had a Memorial Day Service which is always a touching Blessing to me.
It’s an honor we all have to show our appreciation to our service families—the past, the present and the future—who have served; and the only people who come to the service are the American Legion members. I always feel sad because there are a lot of families in Wallis who should be there to show respect to all service families overseas. We should be proud to be Americans. Everyone misses such a meaningful service. Our town should support such a patriotic event.

The school year has flown by and it is time for another group of high school students to graduate and move ahead to find their place in the world.
This is the first class of the three I’ve watched graduate at Brazos High School that I can actually identify most of the kids in the class picture. I am proud to say that it has been a joy to watch the pride and dedication they have exhibited in activities from academics to athletics, major livestock shows and also to youth groups in the local churches.

Senator Glenn Hegar joins the American Cancer Society in reminding all Texans that May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer and more than a million people are diagnosed with this disease each year. Although most forms of skin cancer are highly curable, there is a type of skin cancer, melanoma, which is serious and very difficult to treat.

What do I do when a device attached to my computer does not work?
There are only four possibilities that can cause a device (External Hard Drive, Scanner, Printer, Modem, etc.) attached to your computer or laptop not to work properly. The first two are the power cable and the data cable. The third possibility is that the software and drivers associated with the device are not installed correctly and/or the software and drivers for the device need to be updated.

We still have heroes
Posted on May 23rd, 2008
Everyone loves a story about a hero. Here’s one for our town, for today.
There is a lady living in Wallis who lived an interesting life, full of adventures and talents. Her last few years have been filled with little but depression and increasingly debilitating pain; suffering a number of life-threatening illnesses.
This lady uses much of her strength, needing a walker and carrying an oxygen tank, walking down the street twice a week to choir practice and then to church service on Sunday. Efforts to find someone with the time and ability to build a ramp over her steps for safety and ease have been in vain for six months. She is a hero to the people who know her, but not the hero in this story.

Sometimes a really simple gesture can turn a rough day into a great day.
Tuesday morning started out as a normal deadline day. That means my wife and partner (the same person) and I look forward to around 12-14 hours of steady work to get the paper finished. Right away we had computer problems that set us back what would turn into about six hours. That’s not a good way to start.

I am not easily surprised by what I hear in public meetings anymore, but I was shocked on Monday morning at the Austin County Commissioners Court meeting. John Hofmann, Regional Manager of the Brazos River Authority gave an update on the Allen’s Creek Reservoir Project. When asked about drainage issues in the southern part of Austin County and what effect the TTC would have on the project, Hoffmann replied no one from TTC or TxDOT had been in contact with them concerning the effect of one project on the other. He wasn’t aware of the proposed route.

At A Glance - vote on Saturday

Brazos ISD voters have a chance to make a major impact on the quality of education offered to Brazos students with a “yes” vote for the proposed bond improvements at Brazos High School in this Saturday’s election.
The Brazos ISD Board of Trustees, the bond committee, district administration and staff diligently studied their options and made very responsible recommendations to you, the voters, to bring the facilities at Brazos into compliance with state mandated requirements for science labs. They have added health and safety improvements along with technology updates that will give the school building a rebirth that should serve another 25 years or so.

Coach moves down the road
Posted on May 7th, 2008
Editor’s Note: David Walthall, defensive coordinator and assistant track coach at Brazos High School for the past year, has accepted a position he previously held as Athletic Director at Royal High School.
Dear Editor,
I wanted to impart some closing comments to you before I moved down the road to resume my career at Royal ISD. As we know, changes occur quickly in our coaching profession. My sincere intentions were to come to Brazos High School, assist Keith Novicke in building his athletic program, then slide off into the sunset enjoying a retirement that I felt would be both justified and welcomed. So much for best laid plans. I am extremely excited about the opportunity that confronts me at Royal. I am confident those challenges will be met. I feel that I have come home. I will work tirelessly to develop a positive and beneficial relationship between the school districts.
