The right to own and use private property is one of the most important human rights and the cornerstone for economic prosperity; that is why our founders guaranteed it in the Constitution and listed property in the same category and with the same prominence as life…and…liberty.
We must once again prioritize the protection of private property ownership. Nowhere has the need for this elevation been manifested more than in the transportation policies of our great state. The Texas population is growing. We picked up two seats in Congress after the last census, and experts believe Texas will pick up three or four more with the 2010 count. More people equal more cars, which equals either more congestion or more roads.

Here we are at election time and it is time for local voters to make up their minds on a couple of tax issues as well as to select three city councilmen in Wallis and a new trustee for Brazos ISD.
I would like to address the Emergency Services District #3 tax cap issue in this column. I’ll get to the bond election next week.

The months of April and May are two of the busiest months of the year around a small town newspaper office. There are elections, city and county meetings, all kinds of sporting events, academic UIL contests, celebrations every weekend and of course, graduation is right around the corner. Covering the local news becomes an around the clock, seven-day-a-week job that can begin to wear on the nerves of even the most dedicated journalist. On top of all that is the added weight of tax season on us small businessmen.

For What It’s Worth-Seven days in Ireland

Seven of us went to Ireland for seven days. Our crew consisted of four construction hands, one banker, a lawyer, and a really loud Texan from Odessa. I’ve heard that seven is a lucky number because you have seven holes in your head (two eyes, two for the nose, two ears, and a mouth), but after watching this ensemble in the airport I wasn’t sure that I was going to be so lucky.
