    PJ Polar Express Day at Brazos Elementary

    Brazos Elementary will be hosting their first pajama clad movie day extravaganza during school hours on December 20, 2012; kickoff will be at 8:30 a.m. This is an early release day for students. Students, parents, and teachers are free to wear their school appropriate pajamas for the event. We will have a special holiday reading, caroling, and Santa visit to commemorate the holiday season followed by the movie: The Polar Express. The event will take place in the Brazos Elementary gym. Students will follow their regular lunch schedule, hence, snacks will not be allowed at the event. Feel free to bring blankets and pillows. We look forward to seeing everyone there!     Jackson honored at namesake relays

    C.M. Jackson served the Orchard and Brazos school districts for 28 years and the Brazos Middle School still holds the annual C.M. Jackson Relays first named in honor of Jackson in 1985.
    Jackson returned to Cougar Stadium on March 1 for the 28th running of his namesake event and was introduced to a standing ovation prior to the running events by Brazos administrators.

    Austin County 4-H Members Win National Beef Quiz Bowl Contest

    Austin County is home to National champions. Members of the 4-H Beef Quiz Bowl team were crowned National Champions recently at the National Beef Quiz Bowl Contest which was held in Houston in conjunction with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on Friday, March 2. Team members Tyler Bond, Nate Compton, Walker Eskew and Katelynn Miller were invited to participate in the contest due to their second place finish in the state 4-H Beef Quiz Bowl Contest last June in College Station. This year’s contests marks only the second year for the national competition to be held at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

    Adamcik takes Grand Champion at SA

    Grand Champion Commercial Steer honors at the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo were received by Amber Adamcik, center, of Wallis. Adamcik is currently a member of Brazos FFA. She is 13 and an eighth grader at Brazos Middle School and won a $1000 in premiums and a trailer.
    The Junior Commercial Steer Show was held on Feb. 11.

    Brazos FFA Chapter Visits the State Capitol

    Brazos FFA students, from left, Lindsay McAnnally, Kelli Braunagel, Alan Kovar and Kaitlyn Miller attended Agricultural Education and Texas FFA Day at the Texas Capitol on Feb. 21.

    Brazos FFA attended the third annual Agricultural Education and Texas FFA Day at the Capitol, hosted by the Texas FFA Association and the Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas. Texas FFA Day at the Capitol was held Feb. 21 in Austin, Texas, in conjunction with National FFA Week. Students attending from Brazos were Alan Kovar, Lindsay McAnnally, Kelli Braunagel, and Kaitlyn Miller. They were accompanied by Agricultural Science teacher Jane Hartensteiner.

    Brazos One Act Play practice

    Brazos Theater Arts is practicing their One Act Play titled “I Never Saw Another Butterfly” by Celeste Rasponti. In this scene Kylie Kimbley, at left, is playing the character Irena Synkova and Camryn D’Rubio is Raja Englanderova. This play goes through the memories of a Holocaust survivor. Raja goes back in time to tell the story of what life was like in the Terezin Ghetto. Others actors not pictured are Micah Gonzales, Angel Morales, Austin Brzozowski, Sarah Brzozowski and Hannah Mitchell. Brazos will compete in UIL One Act Play on March 24 and will have a public performance in April.

    Brazos High School seniors Francesca Dostal and Cade Davis were named as Homecoming Queen and King during halftime festivities at the Brazos Homecoming game against Palacios on Friday night.

    Brazos Band earns top honors at contest

    On April 6, the students of the Brazos High School band competed in the Region 13 UIL Concert and Sight-Reading in Altair at Rice High School. At the contest they received straight ones across the board, 3 ones in concert and 3 ones in sight-reading.
    Out of the 2A participants at the event, the Brazos High School Band was the only band to receive straight ones. The contest is a two-day event, and for both days only two bands received straight ones, the other being Industrial.
    “I am very proud of the students, they worked very hard, and they wanted this. You could tell in their eyes they wanted it,” said Rolando Cantu, Brazos Band Director.

    Student council, FFA and NHS participate in annual food drive

    BHS Student Council, FFA and NHS students participated in their annual food drive in November. The food was collected by local community members Leonard Banse and Thomas Hammermiller and taken to Saint Vincent DePaul and distributed within the Wallis community. Posing with the collected food on Nov. 18 are Leonard Banse, Taylor Nieman, Tommy Hammermiller, Mark Fernandez, Cody Witzskoski, Mason Marek, Jonathan Stork, Alan Zapalac, DeAnthony Alabi-Isama, B.J. Alford, Lauren Grigar, Judy Zapalac, Katelyn Miller, Bradey Bohacek, Juana Mora, Rachel Vaughn and Morgan Supak.

    Brazos FFA competes at leadership contests

    Brazos FFA members competed at District 4 Leadership Development Events on Nov. 15.     Brazos FFA members competed at the District 4 FFA Leadership Development Events on Monday, Nov. 15. Those 16 members made up eight different leadership teams that competed against 18 other schools in District 4.
    Team members and placing are as follows: Job Interview - Lauren Grigar 3rd; Radio Broadcasting - Lauren Grigar, Tyler Cotton and Hannah Stork 4th; Junior Creed Speaking - Jessica Terry 10th; Senior Creed Speaking - Cody Witzkoski 10th; Junior Quiz Team - Jessica Terry, Kelli Braunagel and Kasey Nieman 9th; Senior Quiz Team - Cody Witzkoski, Shawn Kubena, Alan Zapalac and Katelyn Miller 9th; Senior Skills - Taylor Nieman, Stratton Coleman and Cody Henry 7th; Public Relations - Allyssa Young, Morgan Supak and Rachel Vaughn 8th.
    Leadership Development Events are contest that help students build leadership and speaking skills that will be necessary in their future.
