    Balloon pop at SCA field day

    The balloon pop was another race Simonton Christian Academy students competed in on Friday at their facility in Simonton. Their goal was to race to a chair down the lane, pop the balloon by sitting on it and continue the relay with their team members. WNR photo by Joanie Griffin

    May Day was a time to celebrate May. The month that sees the Earth reaching itself ready to burgeon to its maximun capacity. Since the ancient days in England, there prevailed a custom of bringing in the May on May Day. People would go to the woods at dawn to collect flowers to decorate their homes.

    Brazos ISD sets pre-K and Kindergarten registration

    Brazos ISD will register Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students May 1-29.  The Elementary school offices will be open for registration weekdays between 8:30 am and 3:30 p.m.
    All children in the Brazos ISD who will be five years old on or before Sept. 1, 2009, will be eligible to attend Kindergarten during the 2009-10 school year. For more details, you please call Brazos Elementary at 979-478-6610.

    Huggins Elementary School will be holding a book fair April 7-17.  Books ranging from easy readers to best sellers will be available for purchase.  Students may browse the book selection Tues. through Wed., April 7-9 during school hours.  Shopping will being on Tues., April 14 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.  Family Night is planned for Thurs., April 16, from 5:30-8 p.m.  To view books selections, other fun book-related activities, or to volunteer, contact the school at 832-223-1600 or visit the website at www.lcisd.org <http://www.lcisd.org/> .

    CHILDREN’S PROGRAM

    Toddler Time – Tues. at 10:15 a.m. — offers caregiver/child activities, stories and songs for older babies, from 12 to 36 months of age.
    April 7 – Bunnies & Chicks
    April 14 – Let’s Sing!
    April 21 – Tool Belt Fun
    April 28 – Happy Mother’s Day

    Pre-school children, 3 to 6 years of age, will enjoy Story Time, where they hear stories, watch movies, and participate in age-appropriate craft activities, beginning at 10:15 a.m. each Thurs.
    April 2 – Silly Day
    April 9 – Bunnies & Chicks
    April 16 – Musical Fun
    April 23 – Working With Tools
    April 30 – I Love Mom!
     

    The After-School Break—crafts, movies, stories, and more for school-aged children – takes place on the 4th Tuesday of the month, beginning at 4:30 p.m. The program on April 28 will be “Desk-Set Crafts.” 

    The April Teen program, “Chocolate Festival,” will take place on Mon., April 13, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

    Brazos FFA: not just tractors anymore

    Brazos FFA members have been busy the last two months attending the San Antonio and Houston Livestock Shows showing that they are not only a competitor in Tractor Restoration but also Heifers and Commercial Steers.
    The San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo started the show season for FFA members. Members exhibited everything from heifers to goats to tractors and commercial steers.

    BHS poetry contest winners announced

    The Brazos High School library sponsored a poetry contest in February. The first place winner was Sarah Hill with her poem “Winter Dreams.” Vannesa Tovar won second with her poem “Untitled.” Third place went to Jackie Uvalle for her poem “Whispers, noices, rumors and voices…” The awards were as follows: first, $40; second, $20; and third, $10.

    Three Brazos band members headed to state

    Three Brazos High School Band members qualified for the Texas UIL State Solo and Ensemble Competition. The trumpet trio, consisting of sophomore Mason Marek, junior Jesus Martinez, and senior Shelby Sulak received a Superior Rating or 1 for their performance of a Class 1 ensemble at the Region 13 Solo and Ensemble Contest at Edna on Feb. 28.  They will participate at the state competition in San Marcos on June 1.

    School construction progresses

    Construction is progressing rapidly at Brazos High School. Collier Construction crews have been pouring beams and piers for the last few weeks.
