Tough end to a great season

By any standards, except for the hopes and expectations of team members, the Brazos Cougars had an outstanding season. A two-game series loss to Blanco in the Area Round of the playoffs ended their hopes of a long playoff run, but the season may have set the stage for future Brazos baseball teams.
“This is only the beginning,” replied Brazos Coach Rickey Witt immediately following the game. It was his reply to a question of what the early playoff exit meant to Brazos baseball.

Playoff results

Baseball and softball teams from District 26-2A are still active in the playoff brackets despite two of the baseball teams falling last week. All games were affected by the rains on Friday and Saturday causing many location changes.
Brazos baseball was defeated by Blanco 10-8 and 2-1 and Schulenburg fell to Comfort 1-0, 13-12.
Weimar baseball advanced to the Regional Quarterfinals by defeating Navarro 4-2 and 4-3. They will play Blanco in the next round.
Softball district champ Hallettsville advanced to the Region Semifinals with a victory over Poth by scores of 4-2, 1-4 and 5-2. The will play Refugio in the next round.
Weimar girls were eliminated by Rogers 11-8 and 4-2.

Minter represents Brazos at State track Saturday

Brazos junior Bari Minter will compete in two events at the State Track Meet in Mike Myers Stadium on campus of the University of Texas in Austin on May 15.
She will compete in the triple jump scheduled for 10 a.m. and the 200M dash at 2:25 p.m.

Brazos catcher Caleb Little has played outstanding defense behind the plate for the Cougars this season.

The Brazos Cougars reached the No. 10 spot in the Texas Baseball Coaches Association March 12 poll, and more importantly earned a bye in the first round of playoffs with the championship of District 26-2A. Brazos finished the seven- team district competition with a record of 11-1.
Cougars crack top ten, ready for playoffs The Cougars opponent in the Area round of playoffs is Blanco. Blanco was the District 27-2A runner up and they defeated Stockdale 12-2, 11-12, 7-0 in the first round.
The three game series will be in Smithville with game 1 Thursday, May 13, at 7 p.m., game 2 on Saturday, May 15 at 1 p.m. with game 3 to follow if needed.
The overall strength of District 26-2A is apparent in the results of the first round. Runner up Schulenburg defeated Jarrell 8-1 and 11-1 to advance to the Area round against Comfort. The Shorthorns play at Steele High School in Schertz at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, May 13-14 and at 2:30 p.m. Saturday if needed.
Third place Weimar defeated Salado 3-2, 9-5 and will play Navarro. The three game series will be at the Shiner Starplex, May 13, 14 and 15 at 7:30 p.m.
Brazos hosted Fayetteville in a practice game on May 4. The Cougars defeated the District 27A champions 9-4.
Mark Fernandez was the winning pitcher for Brazos against Fayetteville and he helped himself at the plate going 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs and a homerun.
Other hitters for Brazos were Cody Phillips 1 for 2, Caleb Little 1 for 4 with a double, Taber Kovasovic 1 for 3, Stratton Coleman 1 for 3 with an RBI, Willie Joe Fernandez 1 for 3 with 2 RBI and Tristan Williams 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Cougars drop first of series

The Brazos Cougars lost the opener of their three-game series with Blanco in Smithville by the score of 10-8.
The Cougars trailed 10-3 in the bottom of the seventh but scored five runs on a Grand Slam homerun by Caleb Little followed by a solo shot by Clayton Orsak. The Cougars once again loaded the bases with no outs, but were unable to score.
The series resumes Saturday at 1 p.m. at Smithville High School.
Schulenburg fell to Comfort 1-0 at Steele High School in Schertz. They play again on May 14 at 7 p.m.
Weimar defeated Navarro 4-2 at the Shiner Starplex and play game 2 on May 14 at 7 p.m.

Brazos clinches title in win over East Bernard

The Brazos Cougar baseball team clinched their first district title since 1997 with a resounding 10-3 defeat of East Bernard on Saturday, April 24.

Cougar second baseman Cody Phillips applies the tag to Brahma Ben Anderson, No. 13, after a perfect throw from catcher Caleb Little to put another caught stealing mark in the books.

Cougar right fielder Clayton Orsak makes a nice stop in the outfield at East Bernard.

Brazos speedster Tristan Williams, No. 21, added several stolen bases to his totals at East Bernard on Saturday.

A wet coach is a happy coach and Brazos Head Coach Rickey Witt was both of those as his team celebrated their first district title in 13 years with a coach drenching.

The Brazos Cougars wasted no time making their intentions clear on a cool baseball night in East Bernard Saturday. A win clinched the District 26-2A title for Brazos and they scored three first inning runs and four more in the third to take a commanding 7-1 lead on the way to a 10-3 final score.

Brazos softball ends season

The Brazos Cougarettes finished District 26-2A competition with a record of 2-10 after a season ending 10-1 loss to East Bernard on April 24.
Ja’Agen Earthman scored the lone Brazos run in the sixth inning. Earthman, Brittany Sheets and Alyssa Young all had hits for the Cougarettes. Meghan Stavinoha was the pitcher of record for Brazos.
State-ranked Hallettsville was the undefeated district champ and receives a bye in the first round of playoffs. Second place Weimar (9-3) will face Little River/Academy this weekend while third place Rice (8-4) faces Lexington.

Boys Singles: Brandon Witte-over Dylan Sanford (R) 6-2,6-0; over Eric Buxkemper (EB) 6-4, 6-3; Lost to Wade Dillenbeck (SCH) in Championship 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 and lost to Andrew Boettcher (EB) in playback 2-6,6-2, 7-6 (7-5); Third place.
