Posted on November 20th, 2008

The Brazos Cougarettes celebrate the winning point over Salado that sends them back to the State Volleyball Tournament for the first time since their last State title in 2003.

In a period of five days, the Brazos Cougarettes faced three state-ranked top ten teams. On Tuesday, Nov. 11, it took five games to knock off the 5th ranked Rogers Lady Eagles, 21-25, 25-20, 25-19, 23-25 and 15-11. “It was outstanding play by all team members; a total team effort,” said Brazos Coach Denyse Fernandez.
That win qualified the Cougarettes for another of their annual trips to the Region IV Tournament in San Antonio.

Cougarettes slam through the door to State

Posted on November 20th, 2008

The Brazos Cougarette volleyball team has been a little less than consistent through this season. When the playoffs came around, they found a rhythm and have been a very good team for the last two weeks.
“I challenged them at the start of the playoffs,” said Brazos Coach Denyse Fernandez. “I told them the door to State was wide open, why don’t we slam through it?” Brazos did just that last week with their best volleyball of the season.
In the first two rounds of playoffs, the Cougarettes rolled easily through games with Little River Academy and Harper. The competition increased dramatically in the regional quarterfinals against fifth-ranked Rogers.

Brazos senior Lindsey Grigar will be the sole representative of the Cougar Cross Country team running at the state meet this year. Grigar qualified with her eighth place finish in the 3200M race at the Region IV meet in San Antonio on Nov. 8.
“Lindsey ran an excellent race, her best performance since her sophomore year,” said Brazos Coach Eric Stuessel.  “She has qualified to run at the state meet for the third time, but this is her first as an individual.”
The State Meet will be held on Nov. 15 at the Old Settler’s Park at Palm Valley in Round Rock.
A Brazos Cross Country runner has qualified for the State Meet for the tenth year in a row. The streak started with Lindsey’s cousin, Brandon Moseley qualifying for state as a sophomore in 1999.

Cougarette volleyball took two matches last week in three-game sweeps, but that doesn’t mean there was no excitement and they were far from easy victories.
They defeated a solid Weimar team that is ranked 25th in the Texas Girls Coaches Association poll on Tuesday night by the scores of 25-22, 25-20 and 36-34.
Friday night they also won in three games, this time over scrappy rival East Bernard, by scores of 25-21, 25-18 and 25-20.

The Brazos Cougars ran into a Brahma buzz saw Friday night at Cougar Stadium. The East Bernard Brahmas came in and completely controlled and dominated the Cougar offense and defense. The Brahmas managed to score in every quarter in an offensive show that had the beleaguered Cougar defense on the field all night. In the “never quit attitude” of this Cougar team, they managed to make East Bernard earn every point they scored in the 62-20 loss. Nothing came easy for East Bernard.
East Bernard scored late in the first quarter on a Matt Stelzel 27-yard pass to Miles Lee. Chris Plunkett’s point after kick was good.

Dr. Ben Po, Jr. from Fulshear proudly displays his 10-point, 140 plus Pope and Young deer, harvested on the Escondido Ranch near Freer on Oct. 20, around 6:30 p.m. A good shot was made from 20 yards from a pop-up blind. Po used a full body doe decoy and Eston doe lure scent on near by flats. Po is a retired military dentist and has a pediatric dentist clinic in Katy. Way to go Mr. Po.

Hunting season is just around the corner and fishing on the coast has been good. It’s time to head out to the woods or to the water and get away from the rat race. This year has been stressful for all of us with recent hurricanes, fuel prices sky high, the economy and stock market, election year and who to vote for and the war in Iraq. The best thing is to get away for awhile and get out in the great outdoors and relax.
