Brazos baseball kept rolling in District 26-2A play last week with wins over East Bernard on March 30, 6-5, and Hallettsville on April 1 by a score of 11-3.
In the first battle with Brahmas on Tuesday night, Brazos jumped out to a 3-0 lead over East Bernard and increased the lead to a seemingly safe 5-1 lead after six innings.

Near perfect seventh keeps Brazos undefeated

Senior slugger Clayton Orsak celebrates scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to keep Brazos undefeated in District 26-2A with a 6-5 victory over rival East Bernard.
The Brazos Cougars survived a strong come back from the East Bernard Brahmas on Tuesday night to earn a 6-5 win with near perfect baseball execution in the bottom of the seventh inning. Brazos stands at 5-0 in District 26-2A competition.

The Brazos Cougars got six solid innings from starting pitcher Mark Fernandez at Hempstead on March 23, but needed a clutch hit from Cody Phillips to drive in a run and tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the seventh inning.

Cougarettes take district win in Hempstead

The Brazos Cougarettes scored 18 runs on 16 hits to take their first District 26-2A win in an 18-12 victory at Hempstead on March 23.
Meghan Stavinoha was the winning pitcher for Brazos. The Cougarettes offered plenty of run support, scoring twice in the first inning, five in the third, six in the fourth inning and four in the fifth. They added one run in the seventh inning for good measure.
The Cougarettes were idle on March 26, but travel to Hallettsville on April 1 and host Rice on April 6.
Cougars run away with Somerville title

The Brazos Cougar track teams are accustomed to being the small school at most pre-district track meets they compete in. On Thursday, March 25, they participated in the Koppers Relay at 1A Somerville and ran away with the team championship.
Cougar runners, jumpers and throwers scores 168 points for the title. None of the other 18 teams broke 100 points. Second place was District 26-2A rival Hempstead with 74.

Brazos Cougarette track had balanced performances in field events, sprints and distance runs to take first place in the team scoring at the Koppers’ Relay in Somerville on March 25. The Cougarettes recorded 113 points for the title with Shiner coming in second place with 100 points.

The Brazos Cougars find themselves alone at the top of the District 26-2A baseball race after a two-win Spring Break week. Fundamental baseball has been the key to the Cougar’s success. Strong pitching, timely hits and solid defense allow the Cougars a 3-0 start in a strong district.

Cougarette errors lead to spring break

Cougarette softball had two losses during the Spring Break week to district opponents Weimar and Schulenburg.
Four errors, in a game delayed by rain until Thursday evening, in Weimar led to a 13-3 loss to the Lady Wildcats and another five errors contributed to a 10-0 loss to Schulenburg at Brazos on Friday afternoon.
The Cougarettes have Friday off this week and resume district competition when East Bernard comes to town on Tuesday, March 30. They travel to Hallettsville on April 1.
JV Cougars wax Wildcats

Brazos junior varsity baseball defeated Weimar 10-4 on March 16. Willie Joe Fernandez was the winning pitcher going five innings with 4 strikeouts. Jesse Nanes added two strikeouts in two innings.
Cade Davis was 3 for 3 with two RBI’s and he scored three times. Anthony Gillespie added 2 RBI’s and a run scored on a 1 for 3 day. Shawn Kubena was 2 for 2 at the plate. Seth Knight, Kyle Kolafa, Nanes, Fernandez, Dalton Palmer and Dale Dostal each scored for Brazos and Logan Young picked up an RBI.
