Tough end to a great season

By any standards, except for the hopes and expectations of team members, the Brazos Cougars had an outstanding season. A two-game series loss to Blanco in the Area Round of the playoffs ended their hopes of a long playoff run, but the season may have set the stage for future Brazos baseball teams.
“This is only the beginning,” replied Brazos Coach Rickey Witt immediately following the game. It was his reply to a question of what the early playoff exit meant to Brazos baseball.

Playoff results

Baseball and softball teams from District 26-2A are still active in the playoff brackets despite two of the baseball teams falling last week. All games were affected by the rains on Friday and Saturday causing many location changes.
Brazos baseball was defeated by Blanco 10-8 and 2-1 and Schulenburg fell to Comfort 1-0, 13-12.
Weimar baseball advanced to the Regional Quarterfinals by defeating Navarro 4-2 and 4-3. They will play Blanco in the next round.
Softball district champ Hallettsville advanced to the Region Semifinals with a victory over Poth by scores of 4-2, 1-4 and 5-2. The will play Refugio in the next round.
Weimar girls were eliminated by Rogers 11-8 and 4-2.

Minter represents Brazos at State track Saturday

Brazos junior Bari Minter will compete in two events at the State Track Meet in Mike Myers Stadium on campus of the University of Texas in Austin on May 15.
She will compete in the triple jump scheduled for 10 a.m. and the 200M dash at 2:25 p.m.

Cougars crack top ten, ready for playoffs

Brazos catcher Caleb Little has played outstanding defense behind the plate for the Cougars this season.
The Brazos Cougars reached the No. 10 spot in the Texas Baseball Coaches Association March 12 poll, and more importantly earned a bye in the first round of playoffs with the championship of District 26-2A. Brazos finished the seven- team district competition with a record of 11-1.
Cougars crack top ten, ready for playoffs The Cougars opponent in the Area round of playoffs is Blanco. Blanco was the District 27-2A runner up and they defeated Stockdale 12-2, 11-12, 7-0 in the first round.
The three game series will be in Smithville with game 1 Thursday, May 13, at 7 p.m., game 2 on Saturday, May 15 at 1 p.m. with game 3 to follow if needed.
The overall strength of District 26-2A is apparent in the results of the first round. Runner up Schulenburg defeated Jarrell 8-1 and 11-1 to advance to the Area round against Comfort. The Shorthorns play at Steele High School in Schertz at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, May 13-14 and at 2:30 p.m. Saturday if needed.
Third place Weimar defeated Salado 3-2, 9-5 and will play Navarro. The three game series will be at the Shiner Starplex, May 13, 14 and 15 at 7:30 p.m.
Brazos hosted Fayetteville in a practice game on May 4. The Cougars defeated the District 27A champions 9-4.
Mark Fernandez was the winning pitcher for Brazos against Fayetteville and he helped himself at the plate going 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs and a homerun.
Other hitters for Brazos were Cody Phillips 1 for 2, Caleb Little 1 for 4 with a double, Taber Kovasovic 1 for 3, Stratton Coleman 1 for 3 with an RBI, Willie Joe Fernandez 1 for 3 with 2 RBI and Tristan Williams 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Terroristic threat investigated at Brazos High School

Calls from concerned parents to the Austin County Sheriffs Office (ACSO) and Wallis Police Department recently, instigated an investigation resulting in the discovery of a book titled Death Notes and the arrest of a Brazos High School student on the charge of terroristic threats.
On Friday, April 23, the mother of a Brazos High School freshman informed school administrators she had real concerns about her child’s mental state and requested the school personnel visit with the student and offer some assistance.

Council upholds dismissal of police officer during appeal hearing

Wallis City Council held a special meeting on Monday, May 10 to review/appeal disciplinary action resulting in the termination of employee Sgt. Ronnie Griffin on May 5. Police Chief Carl Cearley notified Sgt. Griffin and council through correspondence on May 4 and 5 of his decision to terminate Sgt. Griffin from his position with the Wallis Police Department.

Ellis, Luevano to exchange vows

Jack and Donna Ellis of Wallis are proud to announce the upcoming marriage of their daughter, Kathryn Jeanine Ellis, to Hector Rocha Luevano Jr., son of Hector Sr. and Noemi Luevano of Uvalde. Ms. Ellis is the granddaughter of Jeanette Begley of Matthews, Ga., the late H.J. Ellis of West Columbia, and the late Wallis residents Vance and Esterline Cooper. Kathryn currently teaches sophomore English at Lehman High School in Kyle and resides in Austin. Hector will begin the Department of Public Safety State Trooper Academy in Austin this June. They will exchange their vows before God, family and friends on June 11, 2010, in Kyle.

Travis Alexander Kovar

Kenneth and Wanda Kovar are proud to announce the birth of their son Travis Alexander. Travis was born Feb. 23, 2010 at 7:47 a.m. at Memorial Hermann Katy. He weighed 7 lbs. 15 oz. and measured 20.5 inches in length.
Travis was welcomed home by his big sisters, Savanah and Sierra. Proud grandparents are Frank and Rose Kovar and Bennie and Mary Kanak, all of Wallis.

William “Bill” Poliquin

Memorial services for William “Bill” Poliquin, 66, of Wallis were held Saturday, May 8 at Knesek & Sons Funeral Home in Wallis with the Rev. Tommy Jax, former pastor of Wallis United Methodist Church. Music was provided by pianist Jane Turner and singers Moses Rangel and Lexa Stavanoff.

Allen “Bud” Walger

Funeral Services for Allen "Bud" Walger, 75, of Wallis were held on Friday, May 8 from Guardian Angel Catholic Church with Rev. Thuy Quang Nguyen celebrating the funeral mass and rite of committal. Interment followed in the Hartsville Cemetery. Pallbearers were James Walger, Wayne Walger, Chris Bryant, Jimmy Michulka, Jimmy Polasek and Dennis Putjovsky.
