Katelyn Miller to begin selling fair tickets Aug. 17

Austin County Fair Queen candidates may begin selling tickets Wednesday, Aug. 17 for the Austin County Fair, Oct. 12-16 in Bellville.
Brazos High School senior Katelyn Miller is a Fair candidate and will be sponsored by the Wallis News-Review. An active member of 4-H and exhibitor at the Austin County Fair since the age of 8, Katelyn will be showing a pen of rabbits and a heifer at this year’s fair.
Fair tickets will be available for purchase on Wednesday at the News office or by calling Katelyn at 979-618-1424 or 979-997-2107 or email to katelynskrazes@gmail.com.
Candidates are required to sell at least $1,500 worth of advance gate season tickets or Passports to Fun.
The Austin County Fair Queen is an official representative of the Fair and shall act as hostess at all fair functions. She is also designated as a representative of Austin County to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
The Austin County Fair Queen and Ticket Queen will receive a scholarship of $1,500 each upon entering college or a trade school. Fair Queen Runner-Up and Ticket Queen Runner-Up will each receive a $1000 scholarship. In addition, all girls who sell over $2500 of advance tickets will receive a $50 gift.
The Fair Queen Pageant will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13.

A piece of history

Rudy Knesek has been in Wallis from the beginning. He was born in Wallis on Sept. 10, 1918 and has never strayed far from home. He has been involved in just about every organization the community has to offer.
Rudy said he doesn’t like to brag, but he was the highest ranking boy to graduate from the Catholic School in Wallis in the Texas Centennial Year of 1936. He also graduated in 11 years.

Busy afternoon for Orchard firefighters

Scorched earth and fire-damaged trees were the result of an illegal trash fire on Penny Lake Drive last week. Quick response of local volunteer firefighters prevented serious damage to any structures.

Area firefighters led by Orchard Volunteer Fire Department had a busy afternoon on Thursday, Aug. 4. Orchard VFD responded to three grass fires and was assisted by Wallis VFD and Beasley VFD at the largest fire which was also the final fire of the day.

Wallis resident arrested on indecency charges

Austin County Sheriff’s Office (ASCO) investigators took action resulting from a complaint concerning indecency with a child by sexual contact with the arrest of Thomas Ellerbe at 6863 Austin St. in Wallis on Friday, Aug. 5. Ellerbe was charged with Indecency with a Child by Sexual Contact and transported to the Austin County Jail in Bellville. Ellerbe remains in the Austin County Jail with a bond of $75,000.
The investigation into this crime has led ACSO to believe there may be more victims. Anyone with any information or questions should contact ACSO Investigator David Moseley at 979-885-4116, option 1.
The investigation remains open at this time.

A fun day

Wallis Fun Fest was a fun day.
This year’s Chamber of Commerce fund raiser was a new twist on a wonderful Wallis tradition, the WOFF.
By most accounts, vendors had some success, the auction went very well, the games and activities were enjoyed by many and the Barbecue Cookoff was very successful with 17 teams participating.

A rock and a hard place

Texas has been one of the best states to be in when it comes to the economic woes that have gripped the country for the past few years, but we all have been affected by the economic downturn.
Now, severe drought has taken control and the losses will be huge, both in agriculture and industry. According to AccuWeather.com, the past nine months (October 2010 to June 2011) have been the driest in Texas history.
We happen to live in one of the hardest hit regions, as far as lack of rainfall goes, and our native and improved grasses don’t respond as fervently to a little rainfall as native grasses do in the west and southern parts of our state. We need a lot.

Kolafa Conner exchange vows

Kayla Deanne Kolafa and Jess Adam Conner were united in marriage in a beautiful destination wedding on the beaches of Moon Palace Spa Resort in Cancun, Mexico on June 22.
Approximately fifty family members and friends boarded flights to Mexico on Monday, June 20, to enjoy a week of fun together celebrating this special occasion with Kayla and Jess. All enjoyed the many activities of the resort and a special rehearsal dinner was celebrated on Tuesday evening with all in attendance.
On Wednesday evening, June 22, at 6 p.m. everyone gathered at the beautiful gazebo overlooking the beach to take part in the ceremony as Kayla and Jess became husband and wife. The ceremony began as the groom and groomsmen made their way to the altar followed by the bridesmaids. Attendants included friend of the groom and best man Kyle Dorociak, brothers of the groom, Jarred and Joseph Conner, brother of the bride, Kyle Kolafa, friends of the groom, Aaron Hicks, Cullen Williams and Emmett Rumsfeld. Serving as ring bearers were cousin of the groom Gentry Suazo and nephew of the groom Carson Conner.
Sister of the bride Kimberly Hoogendoorn served as maid of honor. Bridesmaids included friends of the bride Heidi Vykukal, Katie Brandt, Megan Parker, Michaela Green, Molly (Farrell) Rumsfeld and Elizabeth Evans. Cousin of the groom Rory Suazo served as the flower girl.
The bride was given in marriage by her parents and escorted by her father to begin the double ringed ceremony.
Following the ceremony, as the sun set beautifully over the horizon, Mr. and Mrs. Conner were introduced to begin the reception with everyone enjoying appetizers, dinner, cake and dancing to continue the celebration. Toasts were given by the maid of honor, best man and father of the bride. Special dances included a father/daughter as well as mother/son dance. Kayla and Jess celebrated their first dance together as husband and wife to the song “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You”.
Katie Brandt caught the tossed bouquet and Aaron Hicks the garter. Dancing continued into the evening and then all guests joined hands to form a tunnel as Kayla and Jess made their way through to leave on a resort decorated golf buggy.
Guests included grandmother of the bride Anita Kubes, aunt of the bride Dawn Archer, cousins of the bride, Derek Kolafa, Justin Korenek, Tyler Archer, Lori and Carmen Novitski, friend of the bride Lauren Fenn, friend of the family Karen Mize, members of the Conner family as well as numerous other friends of the bride and groom.
