    Alicia K. Vavricka service on Friday

    Alicia K. Vavricka, 53, of Wallis, Texas passed away, Tuesday, August 9, 2011 in Sugar Land, Texas. She was born in Daytona Beach, Florida on Feburary 15, 1958 to Richard Powell and Emma Sue Harrison. Alicia was a buyer for Owens-Minor Health Care. Her favorite hobby was her granddaughter Caroline.

    Alicia is survived by her husband, Edward Vavricka of Wallis, Texas. Her mother Emma Sue Harvey of Manor, Texas. A son Lance Vavricka of Wallis, Texas. Three sisters Pat Mooney and husband Russell of Garland, Texas, Kim Elliott of Manor, Texas and Pam Webb of Manor, Texas, and her granddaughter Caroline Vavricka.

    She was preceded in death by her father.
    Visitation will be Friday August 12, 2011, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Knesek & Sons Funeral Home in Wallis. Memorial Service will be Friday August 12, 2011, 7:00 p.m.

    Fun Fest coming July 30

    New and exciting things are expected for Fun Fest 2011 this Saturday, July 30 at the Wallis American Legion hall and grounds starting at 10 a.m. There will be music throughout the day as well as ‘Mo’, Austin County’s drug dog at 12:30 p.m. A Magic Show is set for 1 p.m. with the Auction starting at 1:30 p.m. in the air-conditioned hall. Hamburgers, hot dogs, nachos, sausage in a boat, Frito pie and all the trimmings will be served beginning at 11 a.m. Winners and participants of the Photo Contest will be displayed throughout the day for all to see. The country store/cake walk, kids raffle, face painting, fingerprinting and sale of tee shirts supporting our troops are just a few activities for all ages.

    Locks of Love donation

    Grace Kruzel, 7-year-old granddaughter of Johnny and Joanie Griffin, donated 12 inches of hair to Locks of Love. Grace has been waiting for her hair to grow long enough to donate and last week was finally able to do it. Grace and her family live in Okinawa, Japan.

    Hot, dry and drier

    I just received the mid-year-nearly-official rainfall report from the Houston Street recording office in Wallis. I know y’all don’t need Vance’s numbers to tell you it is really dry this year, but the latest numbers reveal some interesting facts.
    In Wallis, it has rained a total of 7.87 inches in the 181 days from Jan. 1 to June 30. That is the only time since at least 2000 that it has rained less than 10 inches in the first six months of a year. The next lowest first six months total was 10.3 inches in 2003.

    Blahuta and Pavlock to wed

    Glen and Irene Blahuta of Wallis are pleased to announce the engagement and upcoming wedding of their daughter Ashley Lauren to Shane Michael Pavlock. Shane is the son of Rodney and Marie Pavlock of Orchard. Ashley is the granddaughter of Hilda Blahuta and the late Alphonse Blahuta of Wallis, and the late Steve and Annie Pavlicek of Frydek. Shane is the grandson of Albert and Ellen Pavlock of Orchard and the late Fred and Marie Sulak of Orchard. Ashley is a 2004 graduate of Brazos High School, 2008 graduate of Texas A&M University with a Bachelor’s in Science degree in Kinesiology, and a 2010 graduate from WCJC with an Associate’s of Science from the Physical Therapy Assistant program. Ashley is currently employed at South Texas Rehab in Wharton as a Physical Therapist Assistant. Shane is a 2007 graduate of Brazos High School, and is to graduate from Sam Houston State University in August with a Bachelor’s in Marketing and plans to go into sales. Ashley and Shane are to exchange vows on Aug. 13, 2011 at Guardian Angel Catholic Church in Wallis.

    Kaleb Ty Krenek

    Tracey and Nathan Krenek of Canyon Lake are proud to announce the arrival of their son, Kaleb Ty Krenek. This is their first baby born on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 9:19 p.m. at New Braunfels Christus Santa Rosa Hospital. Kaleb weighed 8 lbs. 3 oz. and was 22 inches in length. He was eagerly greeted that evening by his maternal grandparents Robert and Sarah Young of La Vernia and paternal grandparents Donald and Shirley Krenek of Wallis. Maternal great-grandparents were the late Daniel and Janie Young and Lawrence and Betsy Melenesk, who all had lived in La Vernia. Kaleb’s paternal great-grandparents include Lillian Krenek who resides in La Grange and the late Daniel Krenek and the late Alfonce and Rosie Cerny of El Campo. Kaleb is also welcomed home by aunts and uncles Chad and Nina Krenek, Bobby and Tracey Young and Christine Young and Hank Perez, as well as his cousins Cole and Cassidy Krenek, Blake and Brooke Young and Hannah Perez.

    Sealy native to perform at Sealybration

    The Trishas, left to right, are Jamie Wilson, Savannah Welch, Kelley Mickwee and Liz Foster. They will perform from 7:30-9 p.m. Saturday, July 9 at the Sealybration.

    The last time Jamie (Griffin) Wilson performed at the Sealy B&PW Park, she was the pitcher for the playoff bound 1999 Lady Tiger softball team.
    After graduation from Sealy High School, Wilson attended Texas A&M University, earned a degree in Agricultural Journalism and developed a passion for songwriting and guitar. She polished that passion in College Station, across Texas and throughout the south as a member of The Gougers, an Americana group with four albums to their credit in seven years. She also produced a solo EP, Dirty Blonde Hair, in 2008.

    Newsome, Thornton-Lindsey to wed in July

    Jennifer and Scott Bradshaw of Wallis are proud to announce the marriage of her daughter Elanna LaNise Newsome to Douglas D. Thornton-Lindsey, son of James and Pamela Hinton, of Hattiesburg, Miss. Elanna is currently a student at Ashford University, studying for a BA in English. She is a property manager for Ambling Management Companies at the campus of Southern University of Shreveport, La. (SUSLA). Elanna is the granddaughter of John and Alma Newsome. Douglas studied at Jackson State University and received a BA in Nursing. He’s currently employed with Advantage Travel Nursing as a Registered Nurse. Elanna and Douglas will exchange vows at 5 p.m. on Friday, July 1 at Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church in Wallis. A reception will follow at the American Legion Hall in Wallis.

    Felony charges result from recent fatal car crash on SH 36

    On May 15, Texas Department of Safety Trooper J. West obtained a warrant for the arrest of Leonard B. Pickron, 22, of Sealy, for, Murder, First Degree Felony, in connection to his actions which caused the death of Mauranda Jackson, 45, of Sealy on May 10.
    Pickron, was the passenger in the 2007 Black Ford, pickup, driven by Jackson. The crash occurred in the 7700 block of Hwy 36 South on May 10, at approximately 8 a.m.

    Wallis Cemetery recognized as Historic Texas Cemetery

    Wallis Cemetery Association Director Donald Marek, who is also with the Austin County Historical Society, conducted the ceremonies for the dedication and recognition as a Texas Historic Cemetery for the Wallis Cemetery.
